For over 50 years the Ellison family has been involved in the manufacturing and distribution of circlips, spring steel rings and washers. In the 1950s Arthur Ellison and his sons began producing spring clips in Bingley, West Yorkshire. In the 1960s Ellison Circlips was created and the company moved to a larger site in Harden and thereafter the Company went from strength to strength to become a worldwide leader in the field of circlips and spring steel fasteners. Ellison went on to revolutionise the manufacturing of circlips with the introduction of an in house shaped wire plant capable of producing trapezoidal wire from which the circlips could be formed prior to profile blanking. At the end of the process Ellison Circlips Ltd was the first circlip producer to pack the parts in stacks under shrink film for ease of handling and automatic assembly. Later a process of 100% function testing was introduced to ensure product conformity, particularly for the automotive industry. Where Ellison's led the other manufacturers followed and these processes eventually became industry standard.
Ellison's entered the metal finishing industry in the 1980s through the acquisition of Bradford Plating and the plating mechanical plating divisions of Jonas Woodhead Springs and Morlock Industries lockwashers and spring washers. These divisions all became merged when Ellison Metal Finishing Ltd was created.
At the end of the 1990s Ellisons ceased manufacturing in order to concentrate on metal finishing and distribution.
During the 1980s and throughout the 1990s Ellison Metal Finishing Ltd developed innovative methods of applying high corrosion resistant mechanically plated finishes for Ellison Circlips, and eventually Seeger Orbis (Germany) and Anderton (UK) when all three circlip companies came under the ownership of the same Group.
This expertise continues through Ellison Technical Coatings who provide specialist high corrosion resistance finishes for Universal Sourcing Network (USN) Ltd in the UK and Universal Sourcing Network SAS in France.
